Subject‌ PBI 101

Subject Description:                        Introduction to Power BI

Subject Hours:                                  150 contact hours (75 hours of lecture, 75 hours of lab)

Performance objectives:               This course work will introduce you to Power BI, its building blocks and the various fundamental concepts of Power BI.

At the end of this Power BI program including this subject and the following Power BI subjects, a student would achieve expertise in business analytics to include working with Power BI Desktop, Power BI DAX, Power BI Q&A, Power BI Content packs, Power BI Custom Visuals, Power BI Integrations with Azure Machine Learning and SQL Services.

Prerequisites:                                    Acceptance into the program

Required Tools:                                 Modern Windows laptop with Windows 10. no Macs or chrome books.

Maximum Student: Instructor Ratio: 30:1

 

Content Outline Weekly:

Week 1:  What is Power BI and why use it.  Key Benefits of Power BI

Week 2: Components of Power BI.  Architecture of Power BI. Flow of Power BI

Week 3: SSBI Tools

Week 4: Business Intelligence. Self Service Business Intelligence

 

Basis of Grades:                                Tests and/or Quizzes 25 percent

Final Exam 25 percent

Class and/or Homework assignments 25 percent

Subject‌ PBI 102

 

Subject Description:                        This course work will introduce you to Power BI Desktop.

Subject Hours:                                  150 contact hours (75 hours of lecture, 75 hours of lab)

 

Performance objectives:               You will know how to extract data from various sources and establish connections with Power BI Desktop; perform transformation operations on data and the Role of Query Editor in Power BI.

 

Prerequisites:                                    Acceptance into the program

 

Required Tools:                                 Modern Windows laptop with Windows 10. no Macs or chrome books.

Week 5: Overview of Power BI Desktop Data Sources in Power BI Desktop

Week 6: Connecting to a data Sources Query Editor in Power BI Clean and Transform your data with Query Editor

Week 7: Combining Data – Merging and Appending Cleaning irregularly formatted data Views in Power BI Desktop

Week 8: Modeling Data. Manage Data Relationships. Cross Filter Direction. Create calculated tables and measures.  Optimizing Data Models

Subject Description:                        Learn extended functionality using‌ ‌DAX

Performance objectives:               This course work will help you learn the basics of DAX in Power BI Desktop

 

Prerequisites:                                    Acceptance into the program

 

Required Tools:                                 Modern Windows laptop with Windows 10, no Macs or chrome books.

Content Outline Weekly:

Week 9: Students will learn the essential concepts in DAX and why it’s important.

Week 10: Data Types in DAX Calculation Types DAX Functions

Week 11: DAX Syntax and DAX operators

Week 12: DAX tables and filtering DAX queries

Subject Description:                        Design‌ ‌Interactive‌ ‌Power‌ ‌BI‌ ‌Reports‌

Subject Hours:                                   150 contact hours (75 hours of lecture, 75 hours of lab)

 

Performance objectives:               In this course, students will implement custom, proprietary visuals with an experienced Power BI tool set and learn to create interactive data reports, charts and visualizations using best practices.

 

Prerequisites:                                    Acceptance into the program

 

Required Tools:                                 Modern Windows laptop with Windows 10, no Macs or chrome books.

 

Instructional Methods:                  1. Lecture

  1. Lab

 

Maximum Student: Instructor Ratio: 30:1

 

Content Outline Weekly:

Week 13: Introduction to visuals. Charts in Power BI.  Matrixes and tables Slicers.

Week 14: Map Visualizations. Gauges and Single Number Cards. Modifying colors in charts and visuals. Shapes, text boxes, and images.

Week 15: Page layout and formatting. KPI Visuals. Z-Order
